What's a common commission percentage? I have a snack machine, a beverage machine and a cold food machine at a nursing home. For the past year they have not charged me anything. However, they have a new manager and they want to start charging me a commission. What's reasonable?

Not as far as I am concerned. Actually, my very best strategy is to ask locations, "Are you happy with your current vending service?" You should hear some of the horror stories I learn. This is a "people business", remember that and you will do well.

Is there any "unwritten" vending ethic keeping you from going to places with (perhaps poorly maintained) existing machines and asking the proprietor if they would be happier with a new vending machine supplier? I've seen many prime locations with terribly maintained machines.
